Level: Open to all levels - students of all levels (from complete beginner, to advanced) are welcome to attend. However, the class will be fast paced and some skills may be introduced in class, but only finessed through later practice.

Now’s your chance! Learn to swirl, flutter, and flow with confidence as you explore the art of both silk fan veil and feather fan dancing with Jazida.

Silk fan veils are a hypnotic and extravagant prop that can dramatically enhance performances with a whirl of colour.

In this masterclass, we’ll work with silk fan veils. Originating in Asia and with evolving use through different dance forms, the modern version of these props gained popularity in fusion dance in the 90s. These are typically 1.5m of paj silk attached to bamboo staves.

Through the silk fan veil masterclass we'll learn a variety of tips, techniques and exciting combos. We’ll explore different grips and make use of single, double, open and closed fan work. We will passively build strength in the core, wrists, arms, back, as well as increase flexibility and develop musicality.

Through this workshop, we’ll pull many combos together towards a fun choreography with dynamic staging.

What to wear:

clothing that allows you to dance and move freely without too much excess fabric around your arms (best to street clear or baggy sleeves and very loose tops)

What to bring:

Fan veils if you have them (if not, Jazida has spares to loan to students during class)

​Artist bio:

Jazida has toured the globe as a full-time performer, sharing their craft and expertise with audiences worldwide. Teaching dance classes since 2015, their personalized approach and deep understanding of the art form make their workshops invaluable for performers of all levels.

They have worked to refine performance troupes and stage craft across Australia. They regularly provide expert input as a mentor / outside eye, have led dance teacher development programs through Ausdance ACT and taught at Monash university as part of the JPAIR program. Their professional troupe of “Fabulous Fan Dancers” have toured internationally (from LA to Berlin) and have also competed at the prestigious Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas.
